Guidelines and preparation for IAC Certification Process

This process requires an investment of your time to understand fully and integrate The IAC Coaching Masteries™ into your own life and work so completely that they just become a natural part of who you are and how you coach. The Masteries are designed to create positive shifts and progress for the client. Once fully incorporated, this process can positively alter the ease and effectiveness of your coaching.

Crucial to moving on to Part 2 is a solid understanding of each of The IAC Coaching Masteries™
.

You will demonstrate this via the online exam. Take the online exam and pass with a score of 70% or more. The online exam is an open book test, but to prepare for Part 2, you will need to demonstrate the essence of and situational use for each one of The Masteries in your coaching.

The goal is to be able to appropriately and effectively apply all of the Masteries to any live coaching situation. To prepare for Part 2, the most important thing you can do is get lots of practice. Possibilities include coaching with a buddy coach, a triad, within the safety of a study group or using a mentor coach. Such experience and feedback can help you incorporate your understanding of the Masteries appropriately into your coaching.

You will need to demonstrate not only that you understand each one of the Masteries, but that you also know when to apply or refrain from applying each one with your client. You need to see the opportunity as it arises to use the right masteries in the most effective way to move forward with your client.

If you cannot use the Masteries with your clients then you are not ready to take the exam. Successful coaching occurs when you are not focused on getting all of the Masteries into your session. You want to have these concepts so integrated that they are just a natural part of who you are and how you coach.

Strong coaches use most, if not all, of the Masteries in any given client session. Masterful coaches do this on a regular basis without obvious effort.

Advice for preparing to take the exam:

  • Get in the habit of recording all of your coaching sessions, so you remove the self-consciousness factor for you and your clients.

  • Make sure you get your client’s permission to record the calls and that they give their permission to share them with others if that is what you will be doing by having them sign the Waiver of Confidentiality. You must also read the Wavier of Confidentiality at the beginning of the recording. (Click here for Waiver of Confidentiality).

  • Listen to your calls, share them with a mentor coach or other coach trained in the use of the Masteries, triad team, study group or buddy coach.

  • Check off which of the Masteries you used, whether you used them appropriately, and whether the client made a shift as a result of your usage.

  • Notice if there were missed opportunities to use a specific mastery.

  • Make note of the Masteries that were missing or used inappropriately or ineffectively. Review your study guides or take a class to get a deeper grasp of the mastery and its use in various scenarios.

  • Develop some questions that will help you use the Masteries properly in a given situation. The study guides are a great source of coaching questions to use. The Study Guides are available here.

  • Decide which of your clients you work best with and ask them if you can record their coaching sessions for the purposes of the certification process.

  • For exam purposes choose clients who are:
healthy, smart, action-oriented individuals who are ready to evolve and follow through with your coaching. For your certification recordings, the ideal client makes progress as a result of your coaching. Extremely stuck or confused clients may keep you from demonstrating most of the Masteries.

  • Design the call effectively: Have a beginning, a middle, and an end, within 30 minutes, that results in a shift for the client or some kind of action to be taken before the next call.

How to determine if the recordings are “good enough”

  • Review the recordings yourself and possibly with someone trained in the Masteries

  • Use the note sheet and score each mastery on a scale of 1 to 5. For scoring purposes, score 1 if a mastery was not used, or was used incorrectly, score 3 if the basics of the mastery were used but without follow-through or creating the client shift, and score 5 for mastery of the proficiency. The note sheet is available here.

  • Make sure you have used the Masteries appropriately.

  • Determine if the client made a shift as a result of your usage.

  • Notice if there were missed opportunities to use a specific mastery.

  • Verify that your recordings are no longer than 30 minutes.

  • If you believe you would score at least an 80% on the coaching session, submit the recording. To calculate your score, add the total number of points and divide by 45. This gives you your percentage.

Fees associated with Part Two:

  • Submission of two recordings: $350.00
  • Submission for retest: $175.00 per recording

Please note: Do not try to force the Masteries into your call. It is obvious and ineffective. Let go of your agenda to pass the exam and just do your natural coaching. When you are ready, the Masteries will all be present quite naturally and you will pass with ease.
